Opening Reception: Cat, Stick, Easel, Moon: Surrealist Paintings by Rachel L Bedder

Hudson
SMUSH Gallery

Chock full of surrealist landscapes rendered in rich elemental hues, the paintings in Rachel Bedder’s atmospheric solo show are deliberately ambiguous, and resist easy categorization.

Welcome to the gently strange world of Cat, Stick, Easel, Moon.

Chock full of surrealist landscapes rendered in rich elemental hues, the paintings in Bedder’s atmospheric solo show are deliberately ambiguous, and resist easy categorization. Recurring forms and characters indicate a story that is told obscurely, if at all. Desert-like elements coexist with dreamy cloudscapes and out of place still lives. Informed by a career as an academic researcher in psychology and neuroscience, Bedder's playful use of visual perception cues and symbolism makes Cat, Stick, Easel, Moon an outstanding introduction to this talented artist.

Rachel L Bedder is originally from Norwich, England, and has lived in Jersey City since 2021. This is her first solo show.
